Will Towne

On June 23, 2019, Dr. Will Towne, a recently retired Kutztown University biology professor, will set out from Oregon to ride his bike 3,695 miles across the United States, arriving in Portsmouth, NH on August 12. He is riding in honor of his former student, Josh Wesner, who passed away in 2000 at the age of 23 after heroic battles with injuries from a car accident and Hodgkin’s lymphoma. Josh was a Bio/Pre-Med major at KU, a participant in KU’s Student Government, founder of KU’s Phoenix Group, and an inspiration to all who knew him. Josh’s mother Betty is the beloved KU Field Hockey coach (now retired) and KU Hall of Famer, and his sister Sarah Wesner Greer `02 played field hockey and went on to coach KU Women’s Lacrosse. Josh was the most enthusiastic cheerleader the KU Field Hockey team ever had. Josh cheered for KU Field Hockey wholeheartedly as he did everything else.

Joshua_WesnerJosh’s dream was to become a doctor, and The Joshua W. Wesner Memorial Scholarship supports students who share this dream. The scholarship has been awarded to KU Biology/Pre-Medical majors every year since 2004, with 16 recipients to date. Click here for information about two recent recipients who will be moving on to graduate training in medicine in 2019. The scholarship is currently a one-time, one-year award, and our eventual goal is to grow the endowment so that it can follow each recipient throughout his or her college career. This will require approximately quadrupling the endowment from $25,000 to approximately $100,000.

Please consider contributing toward the Joshua W. Wesner Memorial Scholarship.  Donations of any amount make a difference.

Dr. Towne will keep a blog during the bike ride and post updates on the fundraiser on his personal web pages here.
